Three Important Things
1. NO PAY = NO WORK
The Legislature made a conscious decision to cut your pay by 10% and get 10% less work from you in return. It is critcally important (as well as the Law) that you do not work when you do not get paid for it. Volunteerism is a wonderful thing, and you should feel free to volunteer....someplace you don't also work at.
After two months of dealing with furloughs, some employees (and some managers) are starting to 'forget' the rules, and work and check and send email on their furlough days, or on weekends, or when they aren't supposed to be working. Don't. In a week in which you have a Furlough Day, from 12:01 am Sunday morning through 11:59 pm the next Saturday evening, you are non-exempt, and cannot do work for the University outside of the 32 hours scheduled. It is illegal for you do to work for which you aren't paid, and it also sets a bad precedent. Don't do it. If you are asked to work outside the 32 hours, please contact either a Bargaining Unit representative or a CSUEU Steward immediately.
2. Workload
As we've gotten leaner and leaner over the years, with positions not filled to save money, the workload on each employee has increased. Now, with 10% less time available to do the work, and the impact of Exempt employees becoming Non-Exempt during Furlough weeks, it's gotten much, much worse.
CSUEU is in an active dialogue with HR about workload issues. If you feel the workload in your department is becoming unmanageable, and you aren't getting the support and guidance you need from your manager about handling the workload, please contact a Bargaining Unit representative immediately.
3. Time is short
Although not common, there are times CSUEU members receive either a "Memorandum of Counseling" or a "Letter of Reprimand" from their supervisors. The natural tendency is to go into shock, put the letter in a drawer and pretend it doesn't exist, and not deal with it until much much later. Don't. CSUEU can support you, and there are actions that can be taken, but only if you contact us promptly. Action has to be taken within as little as 21 days. If you get anything from your supervisor that indicates it is going into your Personnel File, contact a CSUEU Steward immediately.
